TXDOT action plan for SH 71 safety improvements

texas 71 signTXDOT has announced short- and long-term safety improvements for the segment of SH 71 in the wake of several deadly traffic accidents. Within 30-to6- days, TXDOT expects to:

  • Roughen road surfaces where wet weather-related accidents have occurred
  • Restripe SH 71 from US 290 to FM 2322
  • Conduct a traffic speed study for the entire SH 71 corridor and reduce speed limits in some sections
  • Install warning signs and flashing beacons

Long-term improvements include:

  • Building continuous left turn lanes and add shoulders from FM 2322 to R.O. Drive
  • Add a left turn lane and shoulders to the rest of the SH 71 corridor

Cedar Park gets $500K for FM 1431 expansion

Cedar Park check presentationA check for $500,000 in federal funding was hand-delivered today by Rep. John Carter towards widening and construction of new intersections on FM 1431 between US 183-A to CR 185. The improvements are needed due to the increased traffic from the US 183-A toll road and a new shopping center and hospital at the interchange.

The projected cost of the enhancement project is $8 million. The $500,000 presented to the city today, an earmark from the of 2008 Omnibus Spending Package, plus another million from an approved bond package, will be used for engineering and design costs.

Downtown Austin Plan presented to City Council

Phase One of the Downtown Austin Plan was presented to the City Council at their Thursday meeting. Much of the Council’s follow-up discussion focused on transportation issues, including the costs of extending rail service to downtown destinations. Estimates for this expansion will be reviewed at the Feb 28 Council meeting.
